Around Tohoku – Niigata | 6 Days

Nearly 30 times the size of Tokyo, the Tohoku region is a treasure-trove of dynamic natural scenery that transforms with each season, exciting, unique local festivals and a rich cuisine of blessings from both mountain and ocean.

Despite this, Tohoku is often overlooked by visitors to Japan in favour of well-trodden metropolises like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Perhaps due to its sheer size!

The region is famous for its well preserved local culture which can be seen especially during the summer time when the four big Tohoku Festivals take place. The region is also well known for its fresh seafood and having the country’s finest rice, sake and apples.

Travelling by public transport in Tohoku-Niigata

This tour combines all the popular sightseeing spots in Tohoku and Niigata area combination of self-drive and public transport.

To travel between cities, the highway bus is a great way to save money and experience destinations intimately. Most buses depart from or near train stations, and prices range from dirt cheap to moderately expensive depending on the time of day and the fanciness of the bus.

Local trains make up for their sluggish pace by affording opportunities to gaze out at the amazing landscape Tohoku has to offer, and some of the slowest trains have the most spectacular views. Most lines are owned by JR, but there are some private lines as well.
