This morning we travel by bullet train to Izu-Nagaoka where we will begin our Cycle Tour in Shizuoka Prefecture. After checking into your accommodation, a bike fit and set up will be done before commencing the ride at 2pm. Today’s ride is a day for the legs to get a good stretch. Through Shuzenji, the roads climbs to the Cycle Sports Centre (CSC) and home of the Olympic Velodrome (Head to the front door and if open it is ok to go in and head up the stairs to the right and see the track). After leaving the CSC, route heads through some quiet country roads, climbing gently, before heading back down toward the river. A really nice descent and head back via some exploring of the area.
Accommodation: 3-4-star Ryokan Hotel Izu
Day 4 Izu Peninsula | RIDE DAY 2 | 80km/1900m
Breakfast will be at 7am and the ride will commence around 8am. Izu Shuzenji Coastal Road – Stunning loop around the ancient onsen town of Shuzenji before meeting the coast and exploring the beautiful fishing villages and coastal views. A long climb to stretch the legs before descending to the coast. A flexible route that can be split into two groups for the first half, then meet together for the second. Excellent off-bike options for any non-riders. Dinner at a local Japanese restaurant.
Accommodation: 3-4-star Ryokan Hotel in Izu
Day 5 Izu Peninsula to Fujinomiya | RIDE DAY 3 | 60kms/583m
An early breakfast at 6:30 am before checking out of the accommodation. Today’s ride will commence at 1pm. This route is for something a bit different and takes us to Fujinomiya along the coast of Shizuoka and Suguru Bay. With the coastal scenes of Japan and Australia being quite different, the route offers some unique perspective and slightly easier on the legs. This route celebrates the coastal heritage of Shizuoka and especially Mt. Fuji always in view. Also, will allow us time in Fujinomiya to visit some local important heritage sites such as Fuji Sengen Shrine and Fuji Heritage Centre. Perfect for non-riders. Tonight’s dinner will be at a local Japanese restaurant.
Accommodation: 3-4-star Ryokan Hotel in Fujinomiya
Day 6 Fujinomiya to Gotemba | RIDE DAY 4 | 3kms/2200m
Breakfast at 7am, check out before starting the ride. A simple ride today that simply involves climbing, a lot of climbing. From Fujinomiya, the route takes you out through the city (never fun riding but has to be done) before meeting with the quieter roads on the lower slopes of Mt Fuji. The real climbing starts at about 400m altitude and you basically climb until the road stops at 2400m. It is a brilliant climb and a tough challenge, but what goes up, must come down, so enjoy the descent!! Good off-bike options for non-riders. Dinner at a local Japanese Restaurant.
Accommodation: 3-4-star Ryokan Hotel in Fujinomiya
Day 7 Gotemba to Hakone
Breakfast at 7am, bikes are packed up at 9am ready for shipping to the airport. After checking out, we will make our way to the drop off point of Gotemba before making our way to the hot spring resort town of Hakone. Famous as a weekend getaway for Tokyoites in modern times, Hakone also has historical significance at a Post Town during the Edo period, where Feudal lords would stop and rest on the T?kaid? route leading from Tokyo to other parts of the country. This is the perfect location to rest those weary legs after 4 days of riding.
Accommodation: 3-4-star Ryokan in Hakone
Day 8 Hakone
Today you have the day to explore Hakone either with your tour leader or on your own. There are many options to either hike, walk or even cycle around the town as well as enjoy a cruise on Lake Ashi. Or some of you will want to just relax in the magic hot springs at your hotel.
