Japan’s railway history is steeped in a rich history of conflict and tradition, spurred on by the West’s bold demands for trade. Their first steam engine emerged from a crucible of internal revolution and cooperation with the West, joining Yokohama to Tokyo by rail before 1900.
For train buffs and travelers who appreciate an exotic mix of technology and culture, The Great Train Journey of Japan is a truly unique travel adventure. Japan’s trains are far more than the world-renowned “Shinkansen” bullet trains. There are luxury cars tailored for tourism, brightly colored electric trains and trams, and workhorse, war-time steam engines.

What our clients our saying…
What a wonderful trip we had on the inaugural Great Train Journey of Japan experience!.
Our guide Lawson was friendly, flexible, and very efficient, in showing us the Japan he knows so well, as well as the magnificent train trips and museums.
A highlight was the visit to a fantastic Bonsai museum, on our way to a railway museum in Saitama.
We certainly felt comfortable with Lawson leading us. There was also enough freedom to spend some spare time in most places we visited.
We felt the advantage of being in a small group, total 8 including Lawson. We look forward to doing more travels in Japan, with Japan Holidays.
My Husband and I were lucky to be part of the first 15 day rail journey in Japan commencing 7th November 2019,which Lawson had put together and escorted.
As my husband is a rail enthusiast this was ideal as it covered many types of trains, trams, ferries also throw in 3 rail Museums with Simulators he was in 7th heaven.Being only a group of 7, plus Lawson, made it manageable as lots of train station to navigate. The JR pass was liquid gold.
Compared to other rail journeys of Japan on offer from competitors, this was good value and was more involved with the culture on a daily basis. Lots of walking involved so a moderate amount of fitness is required. the Autumn colors were just coming into their own but we enjoyed the cooler weather.and scenery.
I would highly recommend this tour if you enjoy train travel with Lawson as our guide from Japan Holidays made sure the language barriers were never an issue.
It was a tick from our bucket list, recommend Japan Holidays for any type of tour not just the rail journeys.
I really enjoyed touring Japan travelling on many different trains.
From the local lines in Tokyo to the bullet trains and the different country regional trains the experience was fantastic.
Hiroshima was a highlight for me along with the bonsai museum.
I would recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys train travel and especially any train enthusiasts.
