Hakuba is a mecca for hiking in Japan and every day in the green season hikers board gondolas to reach the upper areas of the ski fields and then carry on to hike the Northern Japanese Alps.

With an elevation of 3,000 m, the peaks of the Northern Alps mountain range draw hikers and climbers from all over the world. The Hakuba Valley is one of the 3 famous snow valleys of Japan and contains Japan’s largest alpine flower garden. After a day of hiking, soak in the natural splendour of the mountains in alpine hot springs, accessible only on foot. For beginner hikers, easy trails can be safely reached by ski lift, which run all summer long at some resorts.

Day 1: Check in at hotel in Hakuba
Day 2: Take a short walk to the Happo One Gondola Station for the lifts up to hike Happo Ike at 2,060m elevation and then onto Mt Karamatsudake, and return. Total 5-6 hours
Day 3: Start your walk at the Happo Information Center and take a 20min bus ride to the Tsugaike Gondola Station. for the Gondola and Ropeway to Tsugaike Nature Park at 1,860m, and return. Total 4-5 hours.
