The Niyodo River runs for 124km from deep in the mountains of Shikoku and out into the Pacific Ocean. This river’s water purity has been ranked by the Japanese government as one of the best in Japan for many years, leading to it being referred to as “Japan’s most beautiful river.” Springing out from beneath the ground at about 1500m above sea level, the river’s water purity barely changes from its source to its downstream area. The surface glistens with a dazzling cobalt blue hue, which has given rise to its nickname, “Niyodo Blue.”
It is on this river and off the beaten track area that some water activities with English Tour Guides can be found. One of the recommended activities is SUP, Stand Up Paddle Board and tours take around 2.5 hours paddling downstream with views of magnificent mountains and crystal-clear water. Even for beginners, the experienced guides will show you how to stand on the board and paddle so that everyone can enjoy the whole tour with confidence.
Another activity that is also recommended is canyoning. Access to the canyoning area is only possible from the river, so expert guides are on hand to show you how to get to one of the most beautiful gorges in Japan. Visitors will jump in the water, abseil down cliffs, or even just float and enjoy the stunning scenery of huge rocks and blue sky! The tour is about 2 to 2.5hours.
It’s also possible to hike at Nakatsu Gorge as there is walking path which stretches about 2km, and visitors can reach a waterfall at the end of the path. In front of Nakatsu Gorge, there is also an onsen inn where it’s possible to use the onsen facilities without staying overnight, so you can relax after all the outdoor activities.
Finally, a visit to a local brewery should be included. The famous locally brewed craft beers are a must taste experience and will no doubt quench your thirst after all the exciting activities.
