This article is part of a series of posts – 10 things to look out for in Tokyo and Japan in 2021.

The innovative company TeamLab has been around for 20 years but it’s only since 2018 that many people became aware of this company when they opened the Digital Art Museum: TeamLab Borderless in Odaiba, Tokyo. This magical Art Museum pushed the boundaries literally.  There are a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions throughout Japan, but it’s TeamLab’s upcoming temporary exhibition in Roppongi that has tongues wagging.

TeamLab Reconnect – Art with Rinkan Sauna is a unique exhibition set to open in March this year and run until August.  Visitors to the exhibition will take a succession of cold baths and hot saunas in order to open their minds and become one with the art in a whole-body experience. When entering a sauna trance, the senses sharpen, the mind clears, the beauty of the surrounding world comes into focus, and what normally goes unnoticed can be experienced.  As with TeamLabBorderless, these artworks are not pre-recorded but rather created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. The interaction between visitors and the installation causes continuous change in the artwork: previous visual states can never be replicated and will never reoccur.
