During the short summers of the Tohoku region, which is located in the northern area of Japan, many elegant and energetic festivals are held, allowing many wishes and prayers to be made through them.
Morioka Sansa Odori
Over 33,000 residents of Morioka dress up in yukata and walk the city as they dance to the sound of 13,000 taiko drums and 2,000 flutes. Anyone can freely participate in the “Wa dance”.
Hachinohe Sansha Taisai Festival
The floats are the main attraction of this festival. The people and local businesses in each neighbourhood work together each year to build them. The scenes depicted are based on mythology, legends, fairy tales, Kabuki plays, and so on. Every year a new story or play is decided upon and a new different float is created.
Aomori Nebuta Festival
This festival representative of Japan, energizes the night time streets with “Nebuta” giant dolls of Kabuki actors, and “Haneto” giant dolls of dancing girls.
Yamagata Hanagasa Festival
During this festival symbolizing Yamagata, participants dance to the ‘Hanagasa Dance Song’ as they walk the streets of the city. Watching the float at the front of the parade is a must.
