The Tokyo Olympics is set to commence on Friday July 23rd 2021 and continue until Sunday August 8th 2021. The Paralympics will be held from Tuesday August 24th to Sunday September 5th 2021. The organizing committee has confirmed they are looking at various scenarios and running simulations to understand how the Games could play out under different circumstances. Currently Japan is considering three options for the Tokyo Olympics: having no limit on the number of spectators, imposing a 50 percent cap on spectator numbers, or running the events without fans. Decisions on the matter are expected by the end of April, including the number of spectators permitted into each venue if they are allowed.

In further positive developments, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (POC), and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee (Tokyo 2020) published the first playbook on February 3rd 2021. This provides the framework for the basic principles that each stakeholder should follow before visiting Japan, when entering Japan, during their time at the games, and leaving Japan.
