The Japanese cherry blossom, or sakura, has long been adored by people across the globe. It is regarded as a symbol of renewal, vitality, and beauty. During the spring season of each year, thousands travel to Japan to view the wondrous spectacle of these white or pink flowers blooming en masse.
It is celebrated by enjoying hanami, the tradition of viewing and enjoying the beauty of the cherry bloom. Many people stake out the best spots and indulge in picnics beneath the blooming cherry trees, creating a festive atmosphere with food, drinks, and music.
Hanami often extends into the evening, with yozakura (night cherry blossoms) illuminated by lanterns and lights, adding a romantic glow to the flowers.
When does it happen…
The cherry blossom usually starts from the south, at the end of March, in Kyushu, where the temperature begins to rise earlier. The cherry blossoms bloom northward until early May in Hokkaido.
This progression allows travelers to chase the bloom across Japan and experience hanami at multiple locations over several weeks.
No matter where in Japan you choose to visit, the cherry blossom season promises unforgettable moments and stunning scenery that will stay with you long after your trip.
