Nestled deep in the beautiful nature of Shigaraki town in the city of Koka, Shiga Prefecture, the Miho Museum houses one of Japan’s largest collections of valuable art, attracting attention from both Japan and overseas.

The building was designed by architect I. M. Pei, who is renowned for works such as the large glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The Miho Museum’s collection contains about 3,000 artworks from Asian and Western countries, of which approximately 250 to 500 are on display at any given time.

Built based on the concept of harmony with the natural landscape, most of the museum structure lies buried within a mountainside.

In springtime, visitors will be greeted by weeping cherry trees planted along a walkway leading from the entrance to the main building, which create a sublime setting.

Owing to the relatively low temperature of the area, the Miho Museum is selected as one of the last cherry blossom viewing spots in the Kansai region.
